CE marking is reserved for products covered by EU harmonisation legislation (machinery, low voltage, EMC, radio, toys, PPE…). Cleo identifies the texts that cover your product.

Frequently asked questions about CE marking
01What is CE marking?
The marking by which the manufacturer indicates that the product conforms with the applicable requirements of the Union harmonisation legislation that requires it (Regulation (EC) No 765/2008, Article 2, point 20, and Article 30). It is not a quality label: it is the manufacturer's declaration, backed by the technical documentation and the EU declaration of conformity.
02What documentation do I need for CE marking?
The technical documentation, which the manufacturer draws up, and the EU declaration of conformity, which the manufacturer or its authorised representative signs (Decision No 768/2008/EC, Annex I, Article R2). 03Does my product need a CE mark?
Its category, intended use and applicable legislation must be checked: CE marking is mandatory only where legislation requires it for your product. Our product compliance assessment identifies those obligations and the evidence needed.
04How do I get CE certification?
Identify the applicable legislation, follow its conformity assessment procedure, gather the evidence and technical documentation, then sign the EU declaration of conformity and attach the marking. A notified body is involved when the procedure requires one. No central EU authority issues a general CE certificate. The official EU guide explains the process; Cleo prepares your file.
05Is laboratory testing included in the price?
No, the laboratory tests are billed separately. All the rest is included in the fixed price: the technical documentation, safety assessment, declaration, test coordination and platform access.
06Am I the manufacturer, and do I need an EU representative?
You are the manufacturer if you make the product yourself, or have it made (a factory in China, for example) and sell it under your name or brand (Regulation (EU) 2019/1020, Article 3, point 8). If your business is outside the EU, your products need an operator established in the EU (Article 4): your importer, or an EU representative, a company in the EU, appointed in writing, that acts on your behalf towards the authorities. Cleo takes on that role.
